In order to illustrate potential benefits of noise
control, and in many cases the ease and economy of
its implementation, this page is dedicated to acoustic
Lessons Learned. Many of the examples are taken from
actual ISS or Shuttle flight hardware development
and certification efforts at NASA. However, some of
these examples may have been provided by our partners
in industry, academia, or by our International Partners.
These contributions are identified and are greatly
appreciated by the Acoustics Office.
Fan
Isolation benefits for the DTV - the noise of
the Dreamtime Television (DTV) Government Furnished
Equipment (GFE) hardware was reduced by 5 dBA by adding
a small piece of vibration isolation material between
the fan and its mounting plate. The hardware was above
the Space Shuttle Orbiter acoustic specification,
but with this noise reduction, it met this requirement.
See the link for detailed information.
Add-on
muffler for the CRIM - see the noise reduction
obtained by adding an external add-on muffler to the
Commercial Refrigeration Incubation Module (CRIM)
sub-rack payload. A-weighted overall sound pressure
levels were reduced by 7 dBA. Check out the reduction
in spectral levels.
Quieting the Airlock depressurization pump - This
pump required a major effort to reduce its emitted
noise by 30 dB at some frequencies. See ISS
