Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG)

The Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG) supports the human exploration of space within acceptable levels of risk from space radiation. The office will describe, model and monitor the radiation environment and recommend methods to mitigate the adverse effects of radiation; and is a key components of the operational radiation health plan for all U.S. spaceflights. To fulfill this responsibility, SRAG provides:

  • Radiological support during missions
  • Preflight and extravehicular activity (EVA) crew exposure projections
  • Evaluation of radiological safety with respect to exposure to isotopes and radiation producing equipment carried on the spacecraft
  • Comprehensive crew exposure modeling capability
  • Radiation instruments to characterize and quantify the radiation environment inside and outside the spacecraft

Radiation Operations Support Area
The SRAG Radiation Operations Support Area (ROSA) is a near replica of the Mission Control Center (MCC) radiation analysis console position. This area is used for code development and testing, console operator training, and real-time support. Major equipment includes: 4-bay console with 2 DVIS key sets, DEC Alpha workstations, 2 PCs with monitor, PC servers, tape backup system, uninterruptible power supplies, TV monitor and VCR.

Space Radiation Dosimetry Lab
The SRAG’s Space Radiation Dosimetry Laboratory operates and maintains the state of the art in analysis systems for thermoluminiscent dosimeters (TLD), optically stimulated dosimeters (OSLDs), and plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTDs). All preflight assembly and postflight analysis are conducted in the laboratory as well as crew training sessions for radiation detection hardware.

For additional information, see the Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG) webpage.
