Hazardous Material Summary Tables (HMSTs)
Hazardous Materials Summary
Tables (HMSTs) are printed documents that list all
chemicals or biological materials on a given flight
or mission and the toxic hazard level of each material.
JSC toxicologists evaluate the toxic hazard level
of chemical and biological materials before they are
flown on manned spacecraft. The assigned levels are
documented in an HMST (a printed, flight-specific
document) and in a computerized in-flight version
of the HMST called the HazMat (Hazardous Materials)
database. HazMat data files are computerized, searchable
database files that contain the same data as the corresponding
printed HMST.
How To Obtain Toxicological
Hazard Assessments
"Requirements for Submission of Data Needed
for Toxicological Assessment of Chemical and Biologicals
to be Flown on Manned Spacecraft"
JSC 27472 defines
the terms "chemicals" and "biological
materials" as applied to items being flown on
U.S. spacecraft. It explains who must submit information
to the JSC toxicologists concerning the materials
to be flown and specifies what information is needed.
It provides schedules, formats, and contact information.

"Guidelines for Assessing the Toxic
Hazard of Spacecraft Chemicals and Test Materials"

JSC-26895 describes the process and criteria used
by JSC toxicologists to assess the toxicity of various
classes of flight materials. Please contact one of
